Mākoņkalna Stirnu buks

A place to start exploring Piebalga's charm!

Located in the heart of Piebalga, right between Vecpiebalga and Jaunpiebalga, the ZELTA KROGS building has taken its name from the nearby "real" Zelta Krogs, which operated until the 1920s. In this tavern, the innkeepers were the fathers of Emīls Dārziņš and Jānis Sudrabkalns. Today, the old tavern is in ruins, and a museum, "Jāņaskola," has been established nearby, dedicated to the sons of these innkeepers.

Today, "Zelta Krogs" is managed by Jānis Melbārdis, who has not only established his unique network of cross-country skiing trails but also generously introduced many of them to the Stirnubuks event and selflessly helped in organizing this event! The most beautiful time to visit "Zelta Krogs" is winter, when cross-country skiing trails are prepared in the unique Piebalga area - across hills and meadow labyrinths. Here, six different trails with a total length of approximately 35 km are prepared. Classic skate skiing and backcountry skiing are available, and ski rentals are also available!

The trails are connected to the Vanagkalns and Krepšēni cross-country skiing trails, forming a network of trails over 50 km, which is unique for Latvia.

In other seasons, Jānis Melbārdis has planned hiking routes to allow guests to enjoy Piebalga's unique landscape all year round. The hiking routes mainly follow the well-known and popular "Zelta Krogs" skiing trails, with small adjustments made according to the natural conditions during the snow-free season.
