Tūrismagids.lv:: Holiday route: Abava ancient valley – nature trails, towns and manors
Back in 2015 roe bucks roamed around the ancient valley of Abava near the hospitable active recreation centre Swedish hat owned by Edvīns Balodis. This year we will return to the attractive Abava valley, but this time let's branch out a little into other region of the valley – Kandava and its immediate surroundings!
Nature park "Abava ancient valley" covers an ancient valley formed by glacial waters – Abava valley or Kurzeme Switzerland, where you can see impressive rivers, meadows and slopes, as well as geological monuments.
We have picked Kandava as the competition centre, which is an ancient and romantic small town of Kurzeme – it has been standing on the banks of the river Abava for more than 785 years. A leisurely stroll through the old town allows you to feel the breath of history. The mountainous terrain, cobbled streets, lanterns, ancient courtyards and vaults of buildings, sculptures that alternate with bright plantations – this is the true essence of Kandava. Picturesque hills intertwine with narrow streets, but the ancient castle ruins offer a view of the Abava ancient valley and the oldest boulder bridge in Latvia.
Nature itself has made the Abava valley one of the most beautiful places in Latvia. Winding through romantic bends and lush forests, past ancient towns, cozy country villages, refreshing, small waterfalls and mysterious caves, Abava delights any tourist and visitor. The ancient river valley is 2 km wide and about 30 m deep. Modern Abava is 124 km long.
It’s important to note that this is a specially protected nature territory and being in the nature park "Abava ancient valley" is a special privilege in itself! Let’s not deviate from the marked trail, respect the environment and the rules that prevail here, which help to preserve the beauty around us.
The third stage of the trail race series is wholeheartedly supported by the Kandava residents themselves – thanks to Kandava and the Kandava Parish Association, especially Inga Priede and the head of Kandava Agricultural Technical School Dace Rozentāle, as well as our old friend, local trail guru and our helping hand Egnārs Gudriķis!
See you in Abava ancient valley!!!
