Tūrismagids.lv:: An autumn-filled route: what to see while visiting Ogre

This time the trail race "Ogre Roebuck" will take its participants to the specially protected nature territory "Ogres Blue Hills". Most of the territory of the nature park is occupied by a very rare habitat in Latvia - coniferous forests on ridges (latv. – oss). Osi is a ridge of gravel and sand formed by melting glaciers, which is usually around 5-10 m high, with distinctly steep edges, and rises above the surrounding area. They are formed by sediments carried by the melting waters of the glacier. So – there will be both were to run what to climb!

The name of the Blue Hills has most likely been derived from the typical coniferous forests, which have a bluish tinge looking from the tops of the ridge.

Interestingly at the eastern part of the complex in the territory of Ogre city, there is a protected castle mound “Blue Hill” of national significance. According to researcher Ernest Brastiņš, the castle mound discovered in 1907 was built on a hill, which rises 27 meters above the surroundings. The old road from Ogre to Tīnuži used to pass right through it but was later diverted to the north, at the foot of the hillside. It is said to have been a castle mound of refuge, where people did not live permanently, but only took refuge in cases of danger. Nowadays, the castle mound is poorly marked in the landscape, and most visitors of the nature park are not aware of the existence of this castle mound, although there is an information stand at the top of it.

The autumn stage of the trail race series has been wholeheartedly supported by Ogre residents themselves – thanks to VisitOgre, especially to Dzirkstīte Žindiga and Armands Pivors, and, of course, to our tireless representatives of "Ogre Roebuck" community Jānis Gailis and Robert Īvzāns!

See you in the Ogre Blue Hills!!!
