Lielais ciems is a settlement in Smārde parish of Tukums district. It is located in the North part of the parish and situated 10 km from the parish centre Smārde and 64 km from Riga. This is the native village of the most famous representative of Tukums Olympic race walkers Modris Liepiņš, as well as the leading caretaker of trails in the trail run series Roe Buck Gints Konošonoks! Design of the distance trails was entrusted to both above referred Masters of an endless active lifestyle!

Although this is quite near to the neighbourhood of the Āžu hill which is the native place for the series, we are not going to take the trails of Milzkalns and near Milzkalns! Instead, we are going to enjoy the near trails just on the other side of the road! We will meet in the village where the Olympic athlete Modris Liepiņš has grown up and still lives (50km walking:: Atlanta’96 – 23rd, Sidney’00 – 9th), the community of young athletic walkers is still growing and training here!

Tukums residents are always proud of: “In Tukums there is beauty everywhere in every season. We will try to find the famous Beauty of Tukums at a little further location in the district, we will explore the hilliest part of  Ķemeri National Park – Lustūžkalns hill! In Lielais Ciems [Big Village] there are people with great hearts and at Lustūžkalns hill [translated as the hill for having fun] even the Russian Empress Catherine enjoyed herself, and she had a palace for parties and a golden carriage which was sunk in Valgums lake so that nobody else would get it. This is how it has been!
